CONSUMER TRENDS 2021/2022
Rising to Meet the Expectations of a Changing Customer
The pandemic has shaped the ways consumers buy and think about shopping. One of the biggest and most promising trends is the emergence of the Locavore. This term – which technically defines someone who only eats locally sourced food – is relevant because it speaks to the larger movement of buying local goods.
Below is a list of some consumer expectations for 2021 and beyond, and what you can do as a business to meet their needs:
1. Health/Cleanliness: Can't Touch This!
Shopping in a clean and safe environment will remain a top priority for customers. Continue to communicate about your safety protocols. In addition, most people are enjoying touchless checkout at all their retail outlets, so consider that option, if you haven't already.
2. Sustainability: Local Love!
Trends indicate that sustainability will be the #1 driving force of purchases in the next 5 years. People are expecting brands to be "conscious" of the world around them. One of the most authentic ways to promote sustainability is something you are already doing: being a local business! Buying local IS sustainable for various reasons, including; the velocity at which local money is received back into the community, strengthening community bonds, local job opportunities, the purchase of local products, and contributing to a diverse and robust economy. More on this later!
3. Convenience: Efficiency + Ease
Most of you quickly adapted your business to meet your customers' needs who were not able or willing to visit the store. Now that retail stores are open, continue to offer convenient ways for them to shop. Online color consultations are still on the rise, so adding a digital component to help people learn about your product is effective. Everyone is at a different stage post-pandemic, and giving them options that are quick and efficient can help show that you care.
4. Retail Experience: Give Them Something to Talk About
85% of people are looking forward to visiting an actual store. Give them an experience to remember! Rethink your store layout to make sure it’s working to your advantage and consider how you can make it more of a destination. From offering free coffee and hosting local events, to creating a design section where people can browse colors and products. Make sure they stick around to enjoy your impeccable customer service! If they have an experience worth talking about, they will. And that‘s the most effective form of advertising you can ask for!
5. Omni-channel: BOPIS Matters
76% of consumers want BOPIS (buy online, pick up in-store). We've sent many communications about the importance of having a digital component to your business. People do their research online before going into the store, so make sure they can find you! Think of ways to maximize your digital and physical experience. Make sure you have an email marketing plan so you can communicate with your audience, update your profile on Google Business so you can be found when someone searches "paint store near me" and get that website up and moving, even if it's just a landing page. We can help!
Between low-interest rates, a growing housing market, and the increased number of people working from home, independent paint retailers are in demand! So, ride the wave and adjust to meet the changing demands of your customers. Even slight adjustments can make a big impact!
